Corrupt the Youth

Along with Karina Ortiz-Villa and Aaron Chipp-Miller, I helped found the San Diego chapter of Corrupt the Youth (CTY) in 2022. CTY is an outreach program that brings philosophy to high school students from backgrounds that have been historically excluded from the discipline. By introducing these students to philosophy, we provide them with tools that help them take a critical eye toward the world around them and help them navigate it in an authentic, purposeful way; in other words, we corrupt them. Briana Toole founded CTY in 2016. You can learn more about CTY here.

CTY San Diego has paired with University City High School. Specifically, we have paired with Jennifer Hursza's AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) class. Karina, Aaron, and I spent the fall of 2022 getting to know the students in this class, introducing them to what philosophy is, and constructing a syllabus for the spring semeseter reflective of their interests. We have been primarily focused on showing these students how philosophical tools and thinking can help them address questions and issues that impact their everyday lives.

This sketch of the schedule for the spring semester of 2023 shows the topics that CTY teaching volunteers covered with students.
